Reinvent the Tent – The Vent Tent
In our last blog we discussed how tents can provide that vital extra space for everyone during this pandemic. This week was going to be all about a meditation tent (it will be featured later). However, there is currently a more pressing use for a tent right now. People are tired of the pandemic and worried about what the future holds. We are also having to spend extra time in our households, and tensions are most likely running high. Maybe you feel like you are losing your temper and snapping at friends and family. Perhaps you feel like your ‘bubble’ is about to burst (even the word ‘bubble’ makes my eye twitch). The Vent Tent is the perfect place to step away, calm down and recompose your senses.
Let’s look inside the Vent Tent: there are si
x tried-and-tested methods of relieving the anger and frustration that we are all feeling right now.
Your tent could be set up ready as a personal, safe space to retreat to:
1 Take time out
The Vent Tent is in your garden, so it is a safe space to step into and have a private mini meltdown.
2 Have a cry and a scream
Place a massive cushion in the tent ready to scream into and have a massive cry. Have a roll of toilet paper ready to blow all that sadness and frustration into. When you are ready to face the world again, make sure you throw that toilet paper, sadness, and frustration firmly into the bin.
3 Make a nest
Fill the tent with blankets and cushions. Take with you a hot chocolate and hot water bottle, make a cosy nest and have a sleep. Everything feels better after a sleep.
4 Talk to someone
Take your phone into your Vent Tent and call a close friend and have a rant. It can feel like an enormous release to get everything off your chest. Let your friend know that you are calling for a rant and not advice, and they will be ready to just listen.
5 Write it down
The physical act of writing out our worries and frustrations can transform the way we are thinking. Have a brain dump onto some paper. Write down all those irritations that are making you feel so frustrated – big and small. Get it all out in a flurry on several pieces of A4 paper, let loose, be mean! Then (and this is important) destroy the paper by ripping it into tiny pieces.
6 Meditate
You probably won’t be feeling in the mood to sit quietly – nevertheless, start by taking some deep breaths, focus on exhaling for longer than you inhale. This is a very clever way to trick your body and mind into calming down. Once you feel calmer, spend some time sitting with that peace. You don’t need to do anything fancy. Try and listen to the sounds outside, create your happy place in your mind, play a guided meditation from a device: https://www.lorrainemcreight.co.uk/free/ , focus on counting the breaths or think of a mantra (breathe in joy, breathe out anger).
